Updates will be posted as they become available.

Early election results show incumbent Janice Cader Thompson with a commanding lead over challengers Alan LaPierre and Nate Martin to represent District 1 on Petaluma City Council.

Results show Cader Thompson with 69% of votes, LaPierre with 15%, and Martin with 16%.

The early votes as of 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 4, represent nine of 10 precincts reporting and 1,495 votes counted. The tally represents only a portion of the overall votes, as many mail-in ballots have yet to be counted.

District 1 has 6,440 registered voters, 3,314 of which voted in 2022. Turnout is expected to be higher in this election.

The majority of District 1 lies on the east side, though it extends west of Highway 101. The area encompasses an area roughly bordered by Maria Drive to the east, Petaluma Boulevard North to the west, the fairgrounds to the south, and just past Old Redwood Highway to the north.

Cader Thompson, 71, was the first person elected to represent District 1 after the city switched to district-based elections in 2022.

Challenging retired dental hygienist Cader Thompson are LaPierre, a contractor, real estate professional, and mobile home manager, and Martin, 49, a district manager designate for Staples in Petaluma. This was the first time both LaPierre and Martin had entered a city council race.

Almost $6,000 in political action committee money was spent opposing Cader Thompson – largely funded by mobile home park owners who’ve been fighting the city’s mobile home rules – while the same PAC spent the same amount supporting LaPierre. Nate Martin had no PAC money supporting or opposing him.

Cader Thompson raised nearly $19,000 in contributions and made more than $10,000 in expenses, and LaPierre raised more than $550 in cash contributions and made more than $2,900 in expenses, according to the latest filings. Martin has filed under a form intended for campaigns or candidates that intend to spend or raise less than $2,000.

Election results will be updated online at the Registrar of Voters Office website about every two hours after 8 p.m. until 2 a.m. when all the vote centers have been tabulated, according to the Registrar of Voters Evelyn Mendez.

The office will publish the next results on Thursday, Mendez said.
