Election results: Newell leads City Council District 2 race
Updates will be posted as they become available.
Early results show environmental attorney Brent Newell in the lead to represent District 2 on Petaluma City Council over incumbent John Shribbs, a retired research scientist and retired public school teacher.
Newell leads with 54% of the vote over Shribbs with 46% as of 11:45 p.m.
That count represents three of three precincts reporting and 1,637 votes tallied. The tally so far only represent a portion of the overall votes, as many mail-in ballots have yet to be counted.
District 2 has 7,065 voters, 4,073 of which voted in 2022. Turnout is expected to be higher in this election.
Newell, 56, a 20-year resident of Petaluma, previously told Petaluma Voice he has heard from residents seeking more affordable housing options in Petaluma, and who’ve raised concerns over inadequate transportation infrastructure and few neighborhood gathering spaces. He currently serves on the city’s Planning Commission.
Shribbs, 73, a 35-year resident, has sought to continue the work he started in his first term, saying that it takes about two years on the council to learn many of the details on how the city is run. He is concerned about disaster preparedness, road improvements, and continuing to ensure that the city functions well, be it police and fire, waste treatment improvements, or housing of all types to accommodate our populace.
Shribbs raised over $1,800 and challenger Newell more than $5,200, with no political action committee money targeting that race.
This district encompasses a northeast portion of the city. It primarily includes the area east of Maria Drive extending from Corona Road to East Washington Street. It also includes a small section bordered by East Washington Street, Maria Drive, Gilrix Street, and Ely Boulevard South.
Results will continue to be published at 10 p.m., midnight, and perhaps as late as 2 a.m. on Nov. 4 as each precinct reports back to the Registrar of Voters Office.
Please check back for more updates as results come online.
